Serving as the headquarters for Jiu-Jitsu with the WKKJO, Sherbourne Martial Arts Academy offers you the opportunity to train with the very best in our Jiu-Jitsu Classes.

Our approach to teaching Jiu Jitsu is not solely about learning “fighting” techniques, or how to aggressively defeat your opponent – but to employ self-defense strategy. Starting with the position before submission is the key to success in learning the gentle art and defending yourself with Jiu-Jitsu.

Learn In A Collaborative Environment

Our Jiu-Jitsu Classes at Sherbourne are built around the idea that great progress can be made by asking questions of your seniors. In our classes, senior students are viewed more as coaches to assist the junior students, rather than competitors or obstacles standing in the way of personal triumph or success in competition. We also focus on teaching our students the important history and traditions of martial arts.

Over time, our Jiu-Jitsu students gradually begin learning more high-level techniques and submissions because it is hard to effectively get to "C" if you don't know about “A” and B", or how to navigate efficiently between them.

Beginners

With beginners, we focus on control maintenance and control escapes.

  • How do you maintain the various controls (side control, mount, the back, closed guard…)?
  • What are the escape options for each control and variations of the control.

From this strong foundational understanding, beginners transition to learning submissions (chokes and joint locks) from each of the control positions and escapes from all submission attempts.

Intermediate - Advanced Students

More advanced students (Purple and Brown Belts) build fluency and multiple entry points into submissions from each of the control position and develop the understanding to apply multiple escapes at various stages of a submission attempt.

Learning Modules

The Jiu Jitsu Curriculum at SMAA and of the IJJN consists of three distinct yet connected modules.

Module 1 focuses on drills and sequences for efficient and effective positional movement, as well as control maintenance and escape series.

Module 2 focuses on submission and submission escape series from the various control positions.

Module 3 consists of some wrestling, and MMA strategies and techniques as well as many of the Helio Gracie Self-Defense techniques.
