Give SMAA Jiu Jitsu Training A Try Today!

Serving as the headquarters for Jiu-Jitsu with the WKKJO, Sherbourne Martial Arts Academy offers you the opportunity to train with the very best in our Jiu-Jitsu Classes.

Our approach to teaching Jiu Jitsu is not solely about learning “fighting” techniques, or how to aggressively defeat your opponent – but to employ self-defense strategy. Starting with the position before submission is the key to success in learning the gentle art and defending yourself with Jiu-Jitsu.

With beginners, we focus on building a solid foundation by teaching you how to improve your:
  • Base
  • Posture
  • Structure

Learn In A Collaborative Environment With Our Jiu-Jitsu Classes in London

Our Jiu-Jitsu Classes at Sherbourne are built around the idea that great progress can be made by asking questions of your seniors. In our classes, senior students are viewed more as coaches to assist the junior students, rather than competitors or obstacles standing in the way of personal triumph or success in competition. We also focus on teaching our students the important history and traditions of martial arts. To see more about our specific history, click HERE.

Over time, our Jiu-Jitsu students gradually begin learning more high-level techniques and submissions because it is hard to effectively get to "C" if you don't know about “A” and B", or how to navigate efficiently between them.
The Kobudo taught at SMAA is directly from Okinawa, Japan in its original format as was taught by Master Seikichi Odo to Senior Student Kyoshi Simon Sherbourne. The Knowledge passed on to Sherbourne occurred from 1987 to 2002 when Odo Sensei passed just 10 days after Sherbourne visited Okinawa to train with Odo Sensei for what ended up being their last training session together.

Sherbourne said the following about this trip, "We (Odo and Sherbourne) trained two to three times a day for the 10 days I was there. I just wanted Sensei to know that his teachings would carry on, so I did my best to demonstrate this to him each time we trained."

At SMAA, we pride ourselves on teaching our students the history and traditions of martial arts. Click HERE to check out the lineage of our school!

Coming Soon: 40+ Jiu Jitsu Class

Available only for people 40 years of age and older

It is because we are 40, 50, 60, or 70+ that we need to look after ourselves through more education and tempered physical activity...

The inspiration/objective for this program is aging gracefully/staying strong with age, while continuing to train in our martial arts. My instructor: Roy Harris of San Diego is the Jiu-Jitsu pioneer who first conceived this very original and innovative concept.

The 40+ Jiu-Jitsu class at SMAA focuses on training for longevity, remaining defensive/nullifying attacks, proper defensive positioning/movement, using less strength and speed, while remaining efficient and effective. This class is fun, informative and health oriented. This opportunity to train for people 40 and over will amplify your ability to build and maintain strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance…

This class runs continuously on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 6:45 pm. The cost is $100 plus tax per month.
