A single self-defence program does not accommodate the diversity of needs/abilities of all who desire self-defence training. SMAA offers two unique and distinct sets of self-defence (1 - Evade and Escape; 2 - The Layers of Physical Assault) that cater to the two extreme approaches to self-defence training, and everything in between.

Self-Defence training tailored to suit your needs

The predominant approach to self-defence programs (which we offer) is to focus on nullifying and controlling the perpetrator. This type of program is geared for law enforcement, military, and security personnel. However, the vast majority of the population is not interested in subduing an assailant.

1. Evade and Escape

Most people want to learn how to avoid violence, minimize risk of personal injury, escape and survive. Our Innovative Evade and Escape Self Defense Program has been designed for anyone interested in learning a continuum of techniques that is relatively simple to learn and apply in order to be better prepared to address violence with greater confidence.

2. The Layers of Physical Assault

Enquire about certification for the different layers of physical assault at SMAA:

  • Module/Layer 1 - Distance Striking Offence and Defence
  • Module/Layer 2 - Counters for Grips and Holds
  • Module/Layer 3 - Clinches and Takedowns
  • Module/Layer 4 - Controls on the Ground
  • Module/Layer 5 - Submissions on the Ground

Learn Reality Driven Protection With Self-Defence Classes

At Sherbourne, we base our Self-Defense Classes around confrontations that can be common in everyday life. The governing concept of the program is that our principles and techniques must embrace a practical application of your knowledge to an imperfect world where we are exposed to aggression and violence – a world that you cannot always control.

We strive to research and “stress-test” all of our techniques for our self-defence classes to ensure that they are viable in a variety of real-world encounters.

Self-defence strategies

  • Avoid circumstances that place your personal safety at risk
  • Recognize the behaviours and situations that may pose high risk to your personal safety
  • Recognize the signs of an imminent attack; Strike pre-emptively to defend yourself if deemed necessary
  • Learn to defend yourself when assaulted with punches and kicks
  • Learn strategies and techniques to address assault with a knife, club, or a firearm
  • Learn how to avoid or escape takedowns, chokes, and various restraints and holds
  • Learn how to address/defend and escape once you have been taken to the ground
