3 Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals White Belts Should Know

When it comes to jiu-jitsu training, you often hear the term, “ you’ve got to be good at the basics. ”But what does that actually mean? What are the jiu-jitsu techniques that can be defined as “basic”?

The Ability to Relax While Training

Acquiring this ability is critical to your progress in jiu-jitsu. If you’re unable to relax while training, sooner or later you’ll exhaust yourself physically as well as mentally. You see, while it’s good to train with intensity, having a super-tense competitive mindset can be counter-productive in terms of your progress. It’s been proven that people learn the fastest when they’re relaxed.

Gripping Correctly

The first thing any good jiu-jitsu coach will tell you is, “ if you can’t grip, you can’t fight. ” And these truly are words to remember. What you need to know is that there are three components to effective gripping.

The strength of your hands is the first one. Your hands and fingers will naturally become stronger as you progress in your training. However, you’ll require supplemental training if you want to speed up the process. There’s a multitude of grip-strengthening courses and gadgets on the market.

Efficient gripping is the second one. Regardless of how strong your grip is, if you’re using too much strength to hold on to the cloth, your forearms will eventually fatigue, and your grip will weaken.

The third component is where to grip. You can have the strongest and most efficient gripping technique in the world, but it’ll be useless if you’re gripping the wrong things. You won’t be able to generate the amount of leverage you need to achieve your objective.

Breath Control

Your ability to perform and learn on the mat is very closely linked to your state of mind, which, in turn, is liked to your breathing. If your breathing is even and smooth, it’s likely that your movements will be the same.
