Which Fight Should I Pick?
As soon as Mr. Miyagi first stepped in scene, the fate of karate and martial arts became set in stone. Generations of people would now train in martial arts and the trend would carry on for years to come.
For decades now, children and adults alike remember The Karate Kid as their first introduction to the world of the arts. However, it’s only thanks to the many professional instructors throughout the years that the different styles of martial arts have remained become popular, not only in Canada but the rest of the world.
If you’re one such individual that’s interested in learning martial arts but don’t know where to start, here’s the gist of what we at Sherbourne Martial Arts Academy can teach you!
Karate
In comparison to Tae Kwon Do which tends to utilize kicking techniques, karate focuses on stress techniques with an emphasis on hand strikes such as punching and elbow strikes as well as open-handed techniques like knife hands, more commonly known as karate chops. Traditional styles of this type of martial arts include Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu and Shotokan.
Jiu Jitsu
This Japanese style of martial arts intends to disarm an armed or armoured foe without the use of any weapon or a small weapon. The aim of this type is to neutralize the opponent with join locks, pins or throwing the attacker by using their energy against them, rather than opposing them directly, which is something that karate practices. Jiu Jitsu focuses on several different areas of training such as striking, escaping, blocking, fulcrum throw and the non-fulcrum throw.
Kobudo
When it comes to practicing kobudo, you’re meant to have some objects at hand. Traditionally, kobudo was practiced using weapons such as sais, tonfas, nunchucks, kamas, tekkos and eikus, with the main aim being that kobudo wouldn’t be as physical as karate. However, in present state, kobudo focuses more on the main principle of the art—which is to use anything nearby as an object, whether its belts, shoes, purses or any random object that may be nearby. Kobudo makes the practitioner adept at handling any object and using it to defend oneself.
MMA ( Mixed Martial Arts )
MMA is a full-contact sport that combines various fighting styles and techniques. This style utilizes grappling and striking techniques, which can be used while standing or when you’re on the ground.
Over the years, mixed martial arts have become a whole lot popular since many fighters want to learn multiple styles so they can upgrade their skill set.
